Pink Ribbon Events throughout October

It’s October and all those pink ribbons appearing everywhere mark the arrival of Breast Cancer Awareness month and the many wonderful events being organized worldwide to raise awareness, detection and diagnosis, and to fundraise research for it’s prevention and cure.

Estee Lauder and Phillips are partnering to illuminate Singapore’s iconic ‘big wheel’ structure – “The Singapore Flyer“ with environmentally-friendly glowing pink LED lights. More than 200 similar pink illuminations are scheduled for landmark buildings throughout the world during October as part of The Breast Awareness Campaign’s Global Landmark Illuminations initiative. It signifies a dozen years of casting a bright light on the disease, twelve years of illuminating and educating, and a Guinness World Record in 2010 for “Most Landmarks Illuminated for a cause in 24 hours”!

This year the Empire State Building in New York, the Air Traffic Control Tower at JFK Airport, the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Selfridges department store in London, and Le Grande Palais in Paris are just a few of the landmark buildings which will glow with pink light as beacons of hope and to remind women and men everywhere of the importance of annual mammograms if you are 40 year old or over. Check out all these beautiful illuminations from previous years:

The Estee Lauder Companies have been spreading their life-saving awareness  message for the last 19 years, they are The Breast Cancer Research Foundation’s largest corporate supporter.  Every year they distribute millions of pink ribbons, pink ribbon wristlets and information brochures from their beauty counters with the purpose of reaching and educating as many women and men across the globe as possible.

Combined with its pink illuminations in Vegas, The Hard Rock Café is hosting “Pinktober” a series of live music events and parties together with musicians worldwide to raise awareness and money for local, national and international Breast Cancer charities. A selection of Hard Rock Hotel guestrooms have been furnished with pink sheets and guests are invited to “get into bed for the cause”, 25% of the room rate will support breast cancer research and awareness.  They also had two custom-built pink guitars made for Melissa Etheridge, one of which is being auctioned on E-bay now and the proceeds will be donated to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Celebrities are instrumental in influencing awareness and support. Jennifer Aniston attended  Lifetime’s movie event in Washington on Monday to host a screening of “ Five” an anthology of five short stories about the impact of breast cancer. She directed one of the films, other first time directors include Demi Moore and Alicia Keys, it premieres Oct. 10 on Lifetime.

“Reach for the Moon Tee”a tee shirt that Jennifer designed is on sale from October 11th as part of the 2011 Warriors in Pink campaign. Warriors in Pink was launched by Ford Motors in 2006 to raise funds to fight against breast cancer. They’ve been organizing and sponsoring events such as the Komen Race for the Cure series for 17 years now and team up with celebrities and TV talent annually to increase awareness and early detection through media impressions.
