Everyone at one time or another has owned an uncomfortable, ill-fitting, or otherwise annoying undergarment. But imagine if you lived in another fashion time period – suddenly that bra strap that digs into your shoulder doesn’t seem so bad! History is full of painful, restrictive, and sometimes downright bizarre lingerie that we would never wear today. Check out some of the worst below, and be thankful for how good we women have it in 2012.

Early Bra from a Pompeii Fresco

The Ancient Push-Up Bra

In the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans, underwear was nonexistent for everyone except the very rich, and even they wore only loincloths. Occasionally, women wore breast-binding pieces of cloth to allow them to participate in sporting events. The item we would least want to wear, though, is depicted in an illustration of a female in Crete from around 2000 B.C. She wears a corset-like bodice that pushes the breast – a bare breast, mind you – up on display. Lack of coverage aside, it sounds just plain uncomfortable!

The Figure-Flattening Corset

An Iron Corset - ouch!

The corset is perhaps the biggest offender in the world of uncomfortable lingerie. It started developing in the 14thcentury, when French women began wearing stiff linens under their bodies (the much more comfortable, free-flowing undergarments of the time) to flatten their breasts. That’s right, even though today’s corsets show off our curves, women in the Middle Ages wore them to flatten their breasts as much as possible, because bodies had to be “restrained.” Women even began using paste between two layers of linen to create an even harder bodice. But the worst was the iron corset, thought to be introduced by Catherine de Medici of France, which along with being uncomfortable was also unbearably heavy. Some experts believe that only women with physical deformities were meant to wear it, but regardless of being made of iron, paste, or whalebone, women often fainted due to the restrictiveness of their corsets. We’re lucky that corsets of today are actually pliable!

The First Bra

After years of being sucked in by the corset, a new, lightweight player emerged: the bra. It was patented in 1914 by Mary

Design for the first patented bra by Mary Phelps

Phelps-Jacobs, an American woman who got sick of her corset and devised one out of handkerchiefs tied together with ribbon. She sold the idea to Warner’s for $1500, and the rest is history. As great as a contribution to womanhood as bras are, we wouldn’t want to wear Mary’s original handkerchief model. A little more support would be appreciated!

The Shape-Shifter

The Bullet Bra - yikes!

Because of the development of the film industry, bras became a greater part of the fashion landscape. This brought about styles in bras that had never been seen before. The most famous of these was the cone-shaped bra, popularized by Lana Turner, also known as the “Sweater Girl” (what a euphemism! The 50s were a simpler time). Though it definitely accentuates the bustline, it gives women’s breasts a shape that never occurs naturally in nature. Nowadays the style can be seen on Lady Gaga and various burlesque dancers – copying the Madonna’s style (remember many of her costumes were designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier). Even if we might not wear it popularly as a modern look, the cone bra was definitely the iconic look of the 50s. Some lingerie brands may offer a selection of cone bras, but their impracticality and visual attention-grabbing make them more like novelty or luxury items.

No Bra

Bras, corsets, and other lingerie have often been seen as symbols of larger issues: the

Burning Bra

submissive role of females in much of history, rites of passage for young girls, a woman’s sexual power. Feminists of the 1960s and 1970s regarded bras as symbols of women’s subjugation, and the way to emancipation was to stop wearing or burn them. Bra burning demonstrations were all the rage. Though the Women’s Movement brought many great changes to women’s rights in the US and later around the globe, throwing off your bras was probably going a tad overboard. Whether you’re running a marathon, working a desk job, or hanging out on the weekends, it’s just more comfortable (and discreet) to be wearing a bra than not, especially one that’s well-fitting, soft, and flattering. (These days, bras are being burned and used as fuel! Read more about bra recycling.)

It’s nearly everyone’s worst nightmare – being caught out in public without any clothes on. But this January in Madrid, the capital of Spain, shoppers were lined up in just their underwear, turning a common bad dream into a very fashionable reality.

The event was a store sale. Desigual, a clothing company local to the area, opened their doors on January 2nd with a condition-the first one hundred shoppers to enter the store without outerwear would receive an outfit for free.

Usually, in the beginning of January, the scantily clad promo wouldn’t fly very far-it’s much too cold around most of the world for customers to be exposed to winter weather. In Madrid, however, the weather is obviously warmer, but not by much-the low temp for that day was 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

The gimmick was a success, with men and women (the store offers unisex apparel) lined up in the streets to partake in the sale.

After making a selection in the store, the scantily clad consumers were told to bring their purchases to the front of the store, where the clerks would remove the security tags so they could wear their clothing on the way out.

It’s definitely a risque, daring way to kick off 2012. Right after the New Year’s Holiday, the store took a gamble and brought a lot of national attention to their line of clothing by daring their customers to do something most would never do. The gamble paid off for the dedicated, who shivered outside in anticipation for hours before store opening.

The story doesn’t end here, however. Desigual also owns a brick-and-mortar business in San Francisco, and the chain has reported they will try the stunt in America at the California location soon.

What do you think? Would you try something so daring for a free outfit? Comment below, email me, follow us on Twitter, or like us on Facebook!

One of my most vivid memories of my late-Great Grandmother was her telling my mother to put on a little lipstick and to watch her figure. Great Gran grew up in a time when women focused on taking care of themselves to keep their husbands happy. These days we throw on a pair of heels and grab a fun clutch for a different reason–to make ourselves feel great.

The problem is, unlike many of our fore-mothers, women make up a larger percentage of the workforce than ever before. And it’s easy for us to get caught in what we might call the “work clothes rut.” True, women in uniform is nothing new, but even 1940s Sears catalogues encouraged women to spice up their wartime coveralls and to stay fresh. Again, we need to remember to make these steps not for others, but for ourselves.

Targeting individual pieces like these Haider Ackermann pants can allow you to build new exciting outfits from easy-to-wear pieces.

True, a weekend in PJs, lingerie, or nothing at all, can be fantastic and indulgent. But after a tough work-week, it’s important to have things to look forward to. For me, those two magical days off include wearing the most fabulous thing I can toss together from my closet’s contents. I look forward to the days when I can wear absolutely anything I want. The best part? Having your wardrobe dictated 5 days a week means shopping for clothes that can only be worn 2 days a week becomes surprisingly economical–all a girl really needs to do is stick to a few basics.

Any disciple of the capsule wardrobe can tell you that picking up a few classic pieces can go a long way. I’m not saying you should be dressed to the nines to do your weekly grocery shopping on Saturday morning, but remember that clothes really can still be exciting, and inspiration can be found anywhere.

Do you dare to wear this much white? This embellished jacket from Balmain would also look great with a pair of dark jeans and heels with a simple top.

One of my favorite easy to wear chic pieces is the colorful pair of silky harem pants seen in Haider Ackermann Spring 2012. Sure, these pants have actually been around for a while, but they can always be worn with saucy high heels for a night out, or ballet flats for the afore-mentioned grocery store. I’m also infatuated with the rock-star chic tailored jackets in the Balmain line this season. Match an embellished jacket with a pair of dark jeans and some heels for a dinner, a concert, or even bowling. Try something daring for a day of shopping–go completely mod à la Vena Cava Spring/Summer 2012. Dare yourself to wear something you’d never wear, or re-awaken your sleeping style spirit. Don’t forget to have fun just because you’re stuck with a uniform or dress code for the rest of the week.

Try out a completely different look, like this mod-inspired outfit by Vena Cava.

But don’t listen to me. Do it for yourself. You might feel a little uncomfortable breaking out of the rut at first, but when you really work an outfit, everyone else will just be wishing they had your confidence.

Have any tips to break out of a fashion work rut?

There comes a time in a guy’s life when he finds a special girl, and the moment rolls around that he wants to give her something special. Perhaps a romantic getaway is in store, or maybe a birthday, anniversary or Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Flowers and chocolates are nice, but there needs to be something more personal about your gift to her, and that is what she will appreciate the most. Intimate gifts are intimate forms of expression, may come naturally to you as the next phase in a relationship when the occasion arises.

So, what’s a man to do?

Sexy red lingerie is a staple for V-Day, but make sure it’s to her taste.

Lingerie is a time-honored gift that men have given to ladies they hold dear, and it’s an undertaking not for the faint of heart. Lingerie is a very personal form of endearment (after all, it is the closest thing to her skin). Though a daunting task, shopping for the right lingerie for her isn’t as difficult as it may seem. Guys, if lingerie is something you want to get your gal, I can give a few hints to the first-time buyer for female undergarments. Below I have listed three MUSTS for offering lingerie to your leading lady.

First Lingerie-Giving MUST: Know her right size.

Don’t outright ask her for her measurements, since this will give your intended gift idea away, not to mention make her feel uncomfortable and question why. Use a little bit of stealth, if you have to, in order to make the right size choice. Peek through her dresser drawers. Next time your lady is in the shower, or sleeping, or out, that’s your chance to do a little research. Grab a pen and paper and get ready to jot down some notes. Go through tags. Look for labels printed inside her bras or panties – specifically check for items you know she finds comfortable or wears often, as these are likely a more accurate size guide. This step may prove to be the most challenging, but trust me, it’s all much easier from here.

During your reconnaissance mission, take the opportunity to quickly scan her selection of bras, panties, and sleepwear. Get a feel for her style. This will prove useful for the next step.

A long satiny nightie with lace is perfect for any classy femme fatale.

Second Lingerie-Giving MUST: Think of her personal style.

Just like you have a certain taste in underwear, so does your lady. Does she have lots of lace? Is all of her underwear matching sets, or does she have different colors and styles of bras with separate panties? Is she an all-white kind of gal, or does she lean toward bright colors in her panty stash? What type of fabrics does she like? Were they stretchy, natural cotton, or do all of her underthings have a silky feel to them? Most importantly, what kind of woman is she? Does she prefer a simple, sportier approach to lingerie, or have risqué preference for lace and silk? Is she a more flamboyant gal who loves each fabrics and colors, or even a classy lady with timeless retro sensibilities?

If you want to swing it safe and are overwhelmed by the color, material, and cut choices of lingerie and sleepwear; your best bet is to go with a matching two-piece set, typically in black or white, or her favorite color (if you remember it!).

Third Lingerie-Giving MUST: Opt for Nice or Naughty over Trashy.

If there is a matching set for the bra you want, make sure to get the complete package – bra, panty/thong/hipster, and garter belt. If buying a garter belt, buy stockings to go with them also, so her ensemble is ready-to-wear and she won’t have to go and buy the missing items by herself. Think about how confident she is (or should be), and make sure your gift can help her feel wonderful about her body and herself. If she has extra-long legs, try a short chemise or kimono. (Read 5 Ways To Love Your Lingerie And Your Body for tips on how to make the most of her assets when choosing lingerie.)

A satin kimono will make her feel wrapped in luxury.

You’re offering her the gift of lingerie and the feeling of pampered beauty she deserves, so that you can enjoy seeing her in (and out) of her outfit, but if she doesn`t feel comfortable wearing it because it doesn’t work for her personal style or tastes, she probably won`t put it on again. The gift is for her, first and foremost. So, if she wouldn’t be comfortable in a corset, don’t force one on her.

Maybe a sultry chemise (nightgown) or a teddy (like a bodysuit) is more suited to her style, so give her one of those in a fabric she’ll love, like silk or satin or ultra-soft viscose or cotton. This gift is about her unique style and wonderful personality, and anything you get for her – especially feminine undergarments – should reflect that.

No matter what you choose, presentation matters, so wrap up your present formally and enticingly. Get a big bow or beautiful paper. Make it a game for extra adventure – if you get different pieces, have her open separate packages or hide them in different rooms. Whatever you do, make sure you present your gift with a charming smile and a kiss she won’t be able to resist.

With everyone trying to live up to their New Year’s Resolutions, and the doldrums of cold weather putting a damper on everything, it’s a good time to remind everyone of different ways to get excited about your lingerie AND your body. Follow these tips to rejuvenate your wardrobe and your spirits!

Stop Wearing Uncomfortable Undergarments

This Fall in Luxe Wire-Free Bra by Warners offers sultry uplift & comfort.

It sounds so simple, but it’s something that so many women struggle with every day. The best way to feel better about both your body and your lingerie is to get rid of everything that doesn’t fit and replace it with garments that do. If your weight or body shape has changed recently, it’s a great idea to get refitted – some experts say that cup and back size can change often, and you should get fitted at least every six months! (Click here to read How Often Should I Renew My Bras? By Bra Doctor).

Try A New Style

The winter blues are a great excuse to slip into something more stunning, fun, and sexy; but even just changing up the basics of your lingerie wardrobe will add some excitement to your day. Have you always worn briefs? Try an equally comfortable but booty-emphasizing boy short. Always worn cotton bras? See what a lacy bra does for you. Go for a navy blue or purple bra instead of your traditional black. Even trading a basic for another basic will spice up your closet and give you different silhouettes to play with.

Sizzle in this curve-flattering Marilyn lace bustier by Arianne!

Emphasize Your Assets

This is the time of year when everyone freaks about their bodies and goes into over-drive trying to get into their best shape before spring (and later bathing suit season) arrives. Because of this, it’s also a good time to remember all the things you love about your body, and find ways of emphasizing the aspects you love with lingerie and clothing. An hourglass shape looks great with a corset, like the Marilyn Lace Bustier Bra by Arianne Lingerie, and the structure hides a tummy. A short robe, like the Decadence Satin Kimono by Blush Lingerie, will highlight long legs, especially in a pair of high heels. Feeling good about your assets will help you shift the focus from any insecurities you may have.

Out with the Old, in with the New

Even changing the color of your basics can be mood-altering.

Are you the kind of person who wears underwear until there are holes in them? Do you keep bras that are extremely stretched out because you might have to wear them on “laundry day”, or own several pairs of old jeans you’re keeping around just in case you decide to paint your bedroom? Honestly, it’s finally time to get rid of them. I myself suffer from holding on to clothing too long – I’ve thought many times “No one can see the holes but me”… until of course I go to the gym. Worn-out clothing doesn’t make you feel good, and keeping items that you’ll never wear again just overwhelms your mind and your closet. Donate them or trash them, and spend time finding new clothing that you’ll actually enjoy wearing. Read about how you can recycle your bras to make someone else feel good, too.

Wrap yourself in luxury in this short satin Decadence kimono by Blush.

Spend Time in the Good Stuff

It’s fun to have fancy, exciting lingerie, but it’s less fun if it stuck in the back of the drawer all the time.

Fancy lingerie is often the most expensive, yet often these are the pieces we wear the least (maybe for the sake of preserving them). So spend some time in your best lingerie, either relaxing around the house, going out for a night on the town, or even heading to work. You know you feel great in it, so why not wear it around? It’ll feel like a special, sexy secret that will have you glowing. And nothing is sexier than confidence.

A style with staying power, the Pin-Up look had a huge revival in the 1990s and 2000s and continues to influence the fashion of today and tomorrow. The concept of the pin-up girl goes all the way back to the 1890s and the drawings of illustrator Charles Dana Gibson, which featured tall, narrow-waisted women representing the ideal feminine form. The style that people today associate with pin-up girls is from the 40s, when men fighting in World War Two would “pin up” the illustrations of women in their bunkers. With some attention to detail, creativity and a little flirty fun, it’s easy to recreate a pin-up look for yourself with a few simple rules.

Typical pin-up girl

Form-Flattering Clothing

Clothing in the 40s reflected and accentuated the womanly figure, drawing attention to the shoulders and bust, small waists, and wider hips. Although women weren’t wearing corsets every day, they were

This vintage-style Grenier Bra is a great base for the pin-up look.

popular in pin-up fashion, along with high-waisted panties and other shape-hugging undergarments. You can create the base of your pin-up look with the Vintage Shapewear Bra By Grenier Lingerie and matching high-rise panty. Throw a vintage-style dress on top and you’re good to go. For something a little more hard-edged, build a look with the Mitsou Leopard-Print Camisole Corset by Arianne Lingerie. Add a pencil skirt and you’re on your way to

This Leopard-Print Cami is perfect for a more edgy pin-up girl.

a 50s rockabilly look!

Retro-Style Stockings

During WWII, stockings were rationed as part of the war effort, and some women even resorted to drawing lines down the backs of their legs to look like tights! This might be one of the reasons stockings and garters are particularly important in pin-up fashion. There’s also the added bonus that a simple pull of the skirt can reveal a flirty peek at those undergarments (often the case in the pin-up world). Stockings with detail on the thigh or garters and paired with a skirt with a hemline that goes just below the tops of the stockings will add a thrill to your outfit – and an eyebrow-raising tease for anyone who looks.

Era-Specific Makeup

40s makeup had a very precise look, but luckily it’s easy to remember and achieve. Eye makeup was light, usually only on the top lid, finishing with mascara and eyeliner. Lips were very dark, generally dark red, but sometimes mauve as

Dita Von Teese's makeup fits the pin-up style

well. Nails were also bright red. Blush was natural-hued and lightly applied. So all you really need to invest in to achieve this look is the right shade of red lipstick. See? It’s easy!

40s Hairstyle

Curls were huge during this time period – pin curls, finger waves and ringlets were all the rage, and hair was most always shoulder-length or longer. This is probably the biggest challenge of the pin-up look, with curls being very defined and tight (sometimes problematic for the curly-haired folks) and a lack of styles for short or straight hair (a BIG issue). Luckily

Hair feathers and fascinators are great for straight, short hair

though, retro trends in hats, fascinators, and feathered headbands can help out women who don’t want to bother with curling their hair. Add a vintage-style fascinator or feather clip, and you’ll achieve the look without the extra effort or hairspray.

Touches of Innocence

The most important element of the pin-up look is the touch of innocence. Pin-ups illustrations and photos have a humorous or innocent side, incorporating an “uh oh” moment or the girl’s unawareness into the story of the photo. This gives pin-ups a scandalous but energetic side. Sweet, even girlish details will greatly enhance your look. For example, you can pair an animal print camisole with a pretty white sweater to play up the feminine side. This spirit is what makes pin-up style multi-dimensional and

appealing, so get creative and have fun with it!

With the New Year already in full swing, Spring isn’t too far behind –and neither are the gorgeous new styles in lingerie collections! Neutral or candy-colored, lacy or whimsical, the fantastic world of lingerie continues to delight and inspire this coming season.

I’ve brought together an exclusive sneak preview of a few of the styles coming to Now That’s Lingerie.com starting January, including some of my favourite pieces, and highlighted a few major trends to watch for. Get ready to zing into Spring!

Triumph

Since 1886 when this company started in a barn as a classic corsetry manufacturer, Triumph continues to supply women everywhere with quality intimates for our wardrobes. Be it seductive pieces at their finest, or ultra-high-performance undergarments, Triumph offers comfort and above all, quality.

This Spring/Summer 2012, Triumph whisks us away to magical Europe, and we simply can’t get enough of these feminine indulgences, especially all the beautiful laces and florals this collection has to offer!

The pastel palette is always en vogue for this season and on the other end of the color spectrum, sorbet-bright colours make a cheerful comeback as well. Have you seen how charming they can be with carousels and ice cream parlors? Check out Louis Vuitton’s 2012 Spring/Summer RTW collection! To herald this colourful return from the muted neutrals of winter fashions, here are some breezy, feminine styles that Triumph has to offer. Oh, and don’t forget to send us a postcard from your European holiday!

Want a demurely sophisticated look? This Petites All Over Lace push-up bra (shown here in raspberry pink) is perfect for discovering the Joie de Vivre of Paris!

Curvy ladies alert! Triumph’s Valisere II collection allows women the freedom to celebrate their curves confidently in luxurious comfort and sophisticated styles! And for those of you curvy ladies who like feminine things, Valisere II is only too happy to oblige with their Femme Desire collection.

Blush

This season, Blush promises flirtatious, and they definitely deliver. I love the subtle femininity of Blush’s lacy, sheer and silky soft slips and sets – you will notice that lace features predominantly in their new collection –just the way we adore it. Easy, grown-up glamour with a nod to more sophisticated retro cuts, you’ll find it hard to refrain from playfully winking at yourself in the mirror.

Perhaps my favourite out of their collection, this Sweet Vintage slip is the perfect antidote to the last of your winter blues. This silky slip is too good to be kept a secret… it wouldn’t hurt to have a little bit of the gorgeous lace embroidered detailing peeking out of your dress!

Another favorite is the Idylle matching push-up bra and thong… it has the flirtiest of the spring trends –lace and exquisite floral detailing– combined into one set. Love!

Montelle

Another top ten trend for Spring 2012 is matte satin. Lanvin for instance, showcased beautiful pieces made of the material. This translates into lingerie styles rather well, because it is such a ‘touch-me’ fabric, with its interesting texture and sheen. I’m definitely in love with this set by Montelle, Bedside Manner!

With the perfect mix of classic and trendy, feminine and a little naughty, there is much to look forward to with the arrival of balmier weather!

The bright coloured clothes that popped up all over fashion week runways for Spring 2012 was one of my favorite spring trends. Colorful clothes are not exactly groundbreaking for spring, or for fashion collections in general. Indeed, it has often been noted that fashion trends don’t really change – they’re cyclical. What changes is us–how we feel in our clothes, what attracts us, how we age and see trends differently. And although the use of bright colours for spring fashion isn’t exactly new, it has re-emerged in a few notable ways.

One of the most pronounced uses of colour in this spring’s runways is the use of over-matching: head-to-toe cerulean at Haider Ackermann, yellow and orange at Nanette Lepore. At the same time, this matching of warm and cold tones almost seemed to clash. Blue on turquoise made an appearance at Luca Luca and the aforementioned Haider Ackermann.

Another innovation was simply the variety of rich materials with which these colours were used. Haider Ackermann showed his use of bright colours with rich silks and draped sheers while also incorporating the bold patterns of Spring 2012. Badgley Mischka produced a magnificent collection of brightly coloured garments–reds, oranges, turquoises, blues and pinks.

From Left: Luca Luca Spring/Summer 2012, Haider Ackermann Spring/Summer 2012, Badgley Mischka Spring/Summer 2012, Nanette Lepore Spring/Summer 2012.

Finally, aside from the brilliant pairing of unlikely colours, designers chose to simply bring out entire rainbow’s worth of hues in single collections. Alberta Ferretti showed green, orange, mustard, fuchsia and turquoise in back-to-back exits. Nanette Lepore’s chosen palette was a neon fiesta of flowing garments that also included more subdued coral, purple and blue tones, topped off with brightly coloured makeup. Lepore explained the explosion of colour we’ve seen for spring, stating “[w]e approach color from a new place each season…Everyone in this industry feeds off each other, and the fabric retailers have lately been pushing amazing, sturdy fabrics in these bright colors.”

In the end, the colours used in this spring’s collections compose a veritable laundry list, and the sky is the limit. Whether it be swooshing skirts of neon or sophisticated rust-toned silk, it must be remembered that colour is nothing new, we just need to see it with brand new eyes, and need to be willing to learn what we’re able to get away with.

Women’s fashion has been held to constraints and laws governing women’s bodies throughout most of human history.

Thanks goodness we live in a more modern era, one that allows women more wiggle room (pun intended) on what they can wear…not only for outerwear, but for lingerie and shapewear as well!

Not too long ago, there were laws that mandated what females should wear underneath their outfits. Most ladies were instructed by society to wear corsets outside of the home, everywhere they went. No matter the season or the occasion, a girdle and cinching corset were not only considered acceptable as the norm, but upheld by law!

I found this gem while doing background research: ”In Norfolk, Virginia, a woman can’t go out without wearing a corset.” (There was a civil service job -for men only- called a corset inspector.)

Missouri seems to have the oddest laws concerning women and their lingerie. It seems that, depending on where you lived specifically in the state, different rules could apply to you at one point in America’s history.

In Merryville, Missouri, women are prohibited from wearing corsets, because “the privilege of admiring the curvaceous, unencumbered body of a young woman should not be denied to the normal, red-blooded American male.’” How dreadful! This text clearly shows the common (albeit probably mostly male) belief that women were no more than objects to be gawked at, and women’s natural body shapes were to be on display at all times, for the amusement and visual delight of “red-blooded” males. So the naturally “curvaceous” shape of a woman was considered pleasing in that town. What about elsewhere in the state?

222541 Love Star strapless corset by Blush

The extremely fundamentalistic attitudes of many small-town religious leaders often prevailed – hence, we find laws governing the wearing of corsets, nightgowns, shoes, and hats. Doctors practicing in Long Beach, for example, seem to have a special social responsibility. An unusual piece of loony legislation says every woman must “be found to be wearing a corset” when attending any public dance. A physician is required to inspect each female at the dance. The doctor must ascertain that the woman is, in fact, complying with this archaic law. I guess the town physician poked and prodded every belle of the ball that waltzed in the door.

Obviously, this text is outdated. Most women today can choose what they wear – especially their undergarments – and are empowered by their freedom in their clothing selection.

Ladies, feel free to wear corsets if, and when, the occasion calls! Corsets today are a magnificent mix of traditional fashion with a modern twist – especially since many corsets today are made to be seen and some can even be worn as outerwear (or under a blazer or long-sleeved top.

Already thinking of something special to do for your significant other for Valentine’s Day? Consider boudoir photos, a personalized, one-of-a-kind gift that’s sure to delight and thrill. A photography trend that started in the bridal world and has grown exponentially in the last few years. Boudoir photos are sensual, intimate pictures taken in a woman’s “boudoir” or dressing room. Women are getting boudoir photos taken for special occasions, to give as gifts, and even just to enjoy for themselves.

Personalized vintage boudoir photo look

The great thing about boudoir photos is the many ways you can personalize both the experience of taking the photos and the photos themselves. Bridal is still popular, but many other themes have sprung up, and the themes are as varied as the women themselves. Picking a theme, as well as working yourself up to posing for the pictures, can seem daunting, so let’s go through some of the things you need to consider before getting in front of the camera.

Lingerie boudoir photo

The first thing to consider is style, not just for the clothes you’ll be wearing, but the style of the photos themselves. Different photographers take different styles of photos, and you’ll need to do some research of photographers in your area. Do you want Old Hollywood glamour, or Pin-up Girl saucy? Over-the-top bombshell, or serene goddess? There are even boudoir studios that do editorial-style, high-fashion type shots that look more like the pages of Vogue than Victoria’s Secret. Technical details like lighting and lens type create different looks, so don’t be afraid to explore many different photography studios to get the look that’s right for you.

1810 Triumph Vintage Curves Lacy Bra available at Now That's Lingerie

You can also start thinking about themes. Do you want traditional photos in lingerie, or are there props or other clothing styles you want to incorporate? Anything from feather boas to tool belts and hard hats can be inspiration for photos. Or let the lingerie inspire you. For example, this Vintage Curves Lacy Bra by Triumph Lingerie is feminine and romantic, so incorporating silk sheets, dreamy makeup, and soft lighting into a shoot with this bra makes sense. Compare that look to the one you’d build around Midnight Kiss Satin And Lace Sleep Teddy by Blush, which might inspire dark eyes, black lace and shadowy lighting.

Boudoir Photography Jeans & Camisole

You’ll also have to consider what you’ll wear, or in this case, NOT wear. Partial or full nudity is okay and often expected, but no one will push you to expose more than you’re comfortable with. If you want to do a shoot fully clothed, it’s no problem. Most photography sessions happen with just one photographer, usually female, either in your own home or a private studio. Discretion is incredibly important to a boudoir photographer, so feel free to discuss any privacy concerns you have as you are scouting for photographers.

Midnight Kiss Satin & Lace Teddy by Blush inspires naughty boudoir photography.

Some photographers are busy so booking a photo-shoot date early is a must – start looking now to have photos ready for Valentine’s Day! As mentioned above, most shoots will take place in either a studio or your own home, though some photographers won’t mind doing a shoot on location elsewhere as long as you work out the details in advance. Many photographers offer hair and makeup as an add-on to the shoot, though most say to bring your own clothing. For a basic shoot, Catherine Leonard Photography in New York suggests bringing one set of black lingerie and a set of white, both of which will photograph well, and favorite jeans and a tight shirt. If you’re doing a theme, it’s probably better to stick to one style of clothing (like all vintage clothes or all beachwear) rather than mixing. The photographer will help you pose, but it definitely helps to practice in front of a mirror beforehand to lose some of the model-jitters. The most important thing is to let loose, express yourself, and have fun, and the pictures can’t help but turn out great.
