Outside of award shows, the Met Gala is by far one of the most anticipated events of the year for fashion lovers.

Our celebrity friends search for the absolute best of the fashion world to put together a look that everyone will talk about until next year’s Met Gala. With this year’s theme of how Catholicism and theology inspires fashion, we were expecting some intricate, highly designed pieces of art on the red carpet. Here are the looks that met and exceeded our fashion expectations.

You know the hostess of the Met Gala has to wear something brilliant.

Fashion is art, and art is fashion. If you disagree, you haven’t seen Ariana Grande’s Vera Wang gown.

The infamously beautiful artwork decorating the Sistene Chapel is strewn along her ethereal gown, with a bustier inspired bodice and long flowing train.

Anna Wintour in Custom Chanel

One of the biggest names in fashion, who has access to every designer, chose Chanel for this event – and we’re not surprised.

Anna Wintour’s custom Chanel gown is so fitting for a a holy themed event, yet is so versatile it could work for any awards show or any wedding. The beaded crystals sparkle and shine, and the high neck with clavicle cutout detail makes it a design that truly stands out from any typical white gown.

Another hostess of the evening’s festivities, Donatella Versace truly encapsulated the magnificence of the night’s theme in a design of her own genious creation.

Her navy and gold brocade dress is very sexy, but is made extra chic with an attached open skirt with a chunky black belt. She even accessorized with matching navy and gold boots, which she makes look so very cool.

Amal Clooney in Richard Quinn

via USA Today

You would think pants at the Met Gala would be a no-go, but of course hostess Amal Clooney knows how to make it work thanks to Richard Quinn.

She looked effortlessly glamourous with navy cigarette pants and a shining patterned bustier, made dynamic with a flowing floral masterpiece of a train. The bold red lip and easy hairdo make for such an approachable Met Gala look.

Amanda Seyfried in Prada

via Variety

Amanda Seyfried looks like an angel in jeans and a tee, so it’s no surprise her Prada Met Gala ensemble made her look like she just floated down from heaven.

She goes for bold color with a golden yellow gown, with billowy sleeves that make their way into a unique one shoulder design. Gold petals surround her waist to appear like a belt and complement her sparking head piece.
