Let’s look at some of the traditional, strange, and modern wedding night traditions, and end with some suggestions of what you can do to make yours extra special.

Classic Traditions

Do the Cheesy Stuff

Let him carry you over the threshold - it's tradition for a reason.

Believe it or not, all that silly stuff people do on and before their honeymoons has a place in history. For example, the tradition of escaping the wedding by stealing away in a car and keeping the honeymoon destination a secret came from Ireland. The fun-loving Gaels would play pranks on the newlyweds during their first night together, often keeping them apart (or just awake) until dawn. Couples would often run away secretly to avoid this annoyance. The tradition of messing with the getaway car is the modern equivalent of the all-night pranking. Also, carrying the bride over the threshold comes from a Roman belief that it’s incredibly bad luck if the bride stumbles when entering her new home. It’s so nice when superstition leads to romance!

Share a Bottle of Wine

The word “Honeymoon” is another gift to us from the Gaels. In Gaelic, “honeymoon” translates to “mi na meala” which literally means “the month of honey.” Newlyweds would drink mead, or honeyed wine, at their wedding and for a month after. Another culture that encourages drinking on the wedding night is Chinese. Their tradition is for a couple to drink from two goblets tied together with a red string. This would bring the couple good luck. Though you could get honeyed wine if you want, simply sharing a bottle of wine is the perfect way to pay homage to these traditions.

Odd Traditions

This, like many wedding traditions, comes from Ireland.

Letting Superstitions Run Rampant

For all the beliefs that lead to nice traditions, there are ten times as many superstitions that would make for a strange wedding night. One says that pound of Limburger cheese placed under the pillows of the newlyweds on their wedding night will bring lots of children. It’s hard to imagine that smelly cheese could be that much of an aphrodisiac! There’s another great one that says the first person to go to sleep on your wedding night will be the first to die. Just what everyone wants to think about on the happiest day of their lives: their own death! It’s
definitely fun to read about these things, but it’s probably best not to put any stock into them.

Getting the Whole Family (or Neighborhood) Involved

Even better, there are traditions that focus on the bride and groom’s family getting all up into the couple’s business. Going even further than playing pranks all night long, in France and Germany they might mess up the honeymoon suite by filling it with balloons, spreading food all over the bed, and hiding alarm clocks everywhere. Even worse is a tradition from Benin, where virginity of the bride was extremely important. The bride’s mother looked for bloodstains in the sheets that the couples used – some even fly them out of the window! Not to be outdone, Marquesasian (in Polynesia) brides were expected to have sex with all the male guests of the wedding, with the groom at the end! A little over-the-top, no?

Modern Traditions

Do Something Personalized

Traditions are great, but it’s also nice to do something to remember who you are as individuals and a couple. A great way to celebrate this is to surprise your partner with personalized panties. It’s cute, fun, and quite sexy. You could also plan a scavenger hunt through the house or hotel room, comprised of chocolates, flowers, sexy items like lingerie or toys, and you as a prize at the end. There’s also a tradition in Germany for the family to make scrapbooks of the bride and groom. If you got or made a scrapbook, look at it together, or put on a slideshow with music and reminisce on your past and look forward to your future.

Relax as Much as Possible

While you might feel pressure to do something (scandalous or otherwise) on your wedding night, it might be better to just relax instead. With evening weddings becoming more and more popular, your party might be going on long into the night. Have a glass of wine, soak in a hot tub or bath together, and plan to do something more taxing in the morning. Remember, you’re married now, and you have the whole rest of your lives together for adventure. Take a time out, reflect on how the day went, and process the fact that you just started the greatest adventure of your lives together!

When did wearing one’s PJs outside of one’s private domains become ‘fashionably’ acceptable and a trend to boot?

Perhaps Casual Fridays are to blame?  Bless its soul, but ever since the idea was introduced, relaxation in dress standards for one day a week slowly spread to the other days of the week, until our entire existence was one of comfort if not exactly sartorial splendor.

Well, we’re not quite sure how, but as usual, what we mere mortals do out of a can’t-be-bothered attitude, celebrities somehow take our ideas and manage it into something worthy to be named a trend.  From flannel ‘suits’ with printed bunnies at Walmart, they upped the stakes to zany printed silk concoctions at trendy boutiques in Los Angeles.  Designers have also embraced the trend, starting with Prada in 2001 and continuing today with the likes of Calvin Klein, Louis Vuitton, the ‘proper’ Chanel (or was she ever proper?) Tommy Hilfiger, and a host of others..

Haute couture is all glam and sophisticated print – high street takes a more laidback and cheeky route…

But does star status elevate a look from fashion faux pas to trend du jour?  Take a look at the work of some designers, and the celebrities who have debuted their sleepwear to the world.

Models, celebrities and stylists take to their comfies… can the look be pulled off? I’m not too sure about Rachel’s especially PJ-like, well, PJs…

Pampering your Mom is a great way for her to relax and spend quality time with you.

1. Set up some relaxing spa time in your (or her) home. Have her unwind while you give her a manicure, a mud or facial mask, and a relaxing foot bath. Put on some relaxing music in the background and chat, or put on a movie in the background that you both enjoy watching. These are all things you likely already have at home or can be purchased at your local pharmacy/convenience store inexpensively (and can use over again). Your Mom will appreciate spending time with you and of course, being pampered in the comfort of her own home.

Framing a photo you both love is a great gift that keeps on giving.

2. Prepare an indulgent breakfast in bed for her. Decorate a plate with some of her favorite fruits, eggs and some pancakes (or whatever breakfast fare she prefers), with a freshly cut flower in a small glass, and bring it to her on a tray. A great way to wake up to a special surprise to kick-start Mother’s Day with a smile.

3. Plant some flowers in her garden. Instead of going out to spend money on a bouquet that won’t last, plant her some flowers she can watch grow and enjoy day after day in her garden. To quote a great entry from our Mother’s Day Contest:

“I think one of the best things my mom ever taught me was that there is a quick way or a right way to do things. If I brought her flowers for Mother’s Day she’d just chuck them into a vase and forget about them. If I took the time to plant flowers she’d thank me for them time after time.” - L.T.

4. Find a picture of you and your Mom (and/or your brothers/sisters) that you really love and frame it for her. Or, get her a digital photo frame and upload a variety of photos she would enjoy.

5. Make her a coupon book of things you can do with her (and for her). Easy to make if you own a computer and printer! Design and print her a few coupons she can enjoy and not just on Mother’s Day – like taking her to the park on a picnic, shopping together, having you make dinner for her, going out to a show or a movie, etc. Think of some things you used to do together often, or that she used to do for you, and do it for her instead. A great way to show your appreciation! And you can have fun getting creative in designing the coupons too!

Whatever you choose to do for her, don’t forget to include a personal card (homemade is great too and a fun way to include younger kids for arts and crafts time)!

For Brides When…

… buying a wedding dress

When shopping for a wedding dress, stay true to the theme, setting and season of your wedding.

1. Bring pictures of dresses you like

Do some research, and have an idea of styles you would like to try on and that you’ll also look good in. Bringing pictures is a good idea, because simply describing what you want to the dress consultant might be hard or confusing (especially if you’re interested in a lot of things!).

2. Wear the right undergarments

You should definitely bring or wear a strapless bra, or at least one that can convert into strapless. As dedicated you may be to wearing sleeves now, you may change your mind in the dressing room. Strapless dresses outnumber sleeved by a wide margin, and halter tops and the trendy one-shoulder looks will look sloppy if you’re wearing a bra with straps. You should also wear full-coverage, seamless, nude panties that won’t show under white, or even a lace panty or thong, just as long as you can get the idea of what it will look like.

3. Consider who you want to bring with you carefully

When shopping for wedding dresses, it might seem like a good idea to bring all your female family members, or your best friend who might be a little jealous that you’re the one getting married, or your trashy-clothes loving cousin – you love them, after all. But you really have to think about which of these people have your best interests in mind, and which people might unknowingly set the appointment on the wrong path. If you’re afraid of telling people “you can’t come,” bring just one other person (like your mom or sister) and say it’s a “just us” bonding time.

1. Be somewhat flexible

Even if you’re totally sure of what your bridesmaids will wear, you’ll have to be a little bit flexible because you’ll never know what will come up in the dressing room. Maybe they won’t have the color you want in the style you chose. Maybe you’ll realize that your stick-skinny 12 year old cousin and your curvy 26 year old sister don’t look good in the exact same dress. Maybe you’ll have to have your bridesmaid get cute jackets in case it’s too cold in October for strapless. Though you have the final say, you should take your bridesmaids needs into consideration – these are supposed to be your close friends and family, shouldn’t they matter too?

2. But have a clear vision

The other side of the above advice is to make sure you have SOME guidelines for your bridesmaids. If you have no styles, colors, or lengths in mind, the dress-buying can easily turn into a free-for-all. Even if you want bridesmaids to pick their own style dress, give them a specific color to work with, or fabrics to stay away from. They (ideally) want to pick dresses that please you, so basically know what you want.

3. Discuss finances beforehand

Money is probably the one thing you don’t discuss with your friends, but you need to talk about budget before you go dress shopping. Nothing is going to lead to disaster as surely as your friend or relative having to pay for a dress they can’t afford, or even worse, having to drop out of the wedding because of it. As a bridesmaid, it’s her responsibility to pay, but it’s your responsibility to make sure you find options that will work for her budget.

For the Bridesmaid when…

1. Alleviate drama, don’t create it

This is about your friend, the bride, not you. If you are having feelings of jealous (which are totally understandable), put them aside. Don’t suggest

dresses for your bride that you just want for yourself (or try to talk her out of a dress you might be interested in!). Be pleasant and upbeat. Bring snacks. Don’t take sides in an argument. At best, you can be a buffer between the bride and other people in the appointment who might be causing drama by reminding everyone that you’re there for the bride.

2. Be honest, not mean

As a bridesmaid, you’re there to give your opinion and make sure your bride isn’t picking a dress that is totally unflattering. But this can be an intense and emotional purchase for your bride, so be careful about how you word your comments. Even something as innocuous as “It’s just not ‘you’” might be too much for your bride to handle. Read your bride’s emotions, and think before you speak. If you have something to say that’s not 100% positive, use your judgment about how to say it or whether to say it at all.

3. Be enthusiastic about the bride’s choice

This relates to, actually, both pieces of advice above. Once the bride says she likes a dress and that it might be the one she buys, switch into supportive mode. Even if there are a couple of details you don’t love, as long as it’s not a dreadful mess, this is the time to ooh and ahh and say how much you love it. You’re not her mother, so it doesn’t need to make you cry and you don’t have to worry about the price. It’s about making the bride feel secure in the dress she already loves.

1. Wear the right undergarments

Just like the bride needs the right undergarments when buying a wedding dress, you need to wear the right undergarments when trying on dresses. Again, you’ll want to wear a strapless or convertible bra, and panties that are seamless and won’t bulge out. It’s not as important to wear nude panties since you might be wearing a color, but you should try to any way just in case. You also might be changing with other women, so for modesty’s sake, you’d probably want a full-coverage pair so you don’t flash anyone.

2. Don’t be afraid to speak up

If the bride wants you to wear something that is truly unflattering or uncomfortable, speak up – and fast! The longer you let the bride think you’re 100% behind her choice, the harder it’s going to be to break the news later. Compromise is key; for example, if you’re not comfortable wearing a strapless dress, ask if there’s a way to add straps, or if coverage is the issue, wear a wrap or cover-up. Talking about issues you might have with dresses before the appointment is always a great idea. But even though you have some say, ultimately you have to…

3. Accept what the bride wants

The dress is way too shiny, you hate the color, and the bride wants you to wear a muff like it’s Winter 1895. It doesn’t matter; as long as it doesn’t make you feel uncomfortable about your body, you have to go with what the bride decides. If you never wear it again, so what? Donate it to a charity and move on. The only time this issue becomes sticky is with price. Even though it is an awkward subject, you should approach the bride beforehand about budget and what you are willing to spend, that way it doesn’t have to come up at the dress shop. If it’s within the budget, you have to buy it.

Although I was never one of those girls who could stomach pajamas at school (I couldn’t even wear $40 sweatpants to my university library to study) a trend that has become a little more palatable to me as a 20-something woman is the notion of lingerie as outwear.

Interestingly, it’s very different from the impression of complete laziness that students give off when donning plaid lounge pants in math class. Indeed, what’s so intriguing about lingerie as outerwear is that rather than appearing sloppy, this look actually takes a few rules to work. First is the rule of balance: if you’re going to wear a tiny top, compensate by wearing high-waisted jeans or wide legged trousers. If you’re going to wear more lingerie-inspired pieces, they must be fitted to your size. Finally, the key to lingerie as outerwear is to remember that far from being a trashy look, this is one of carefully created elegance and sexiness. A femme fatale doesn’t necessarily need to prance around in a bra, panties and fishnets. She leaves just enough to the imagination to hint at her feisty side.

Sheer dresses can be a 'do' with the right balance of sheer and coverage.

The Dos of Wearing Underwear as Outerwear:

1. Pair a sheer or lace top or dress with a matching bra. Emma Watson pulled this look off flawlessly at a movie premiere in November 2010, but don’t worry–this sexy, sophisticated look is still a do in my books. A dark lace or sheer top would also look beautiful with trousers or high-waisted jeans.
2. Add a blazer or fun jacket to some matching trousers or dark washed, fitted jeans, but, wear only a bra under the blazer. This will give you a deep-V neckline, and the ability to show off just a bit of your favorite bra.
3. Rock a corset-inspired top or camisole with jeans or a skirt. I especially love Dolce and Gabanna’s corset-inspired embellished top. Not too sure about wearing something quite so flashy? Now That’s Lingerie has quite a large collection of camisole-corsets (and corsets and bustiers) to choose from.
4. Bra tops or crop tops are HUGE for spring/summer. Pair one of these teeny-tiny tops with high-waisted shorts, trousers, a skirt, or jeans. Take a peek at the Piikabu collection of mini-camisoles by Arianne.
5. Tops and dresses with sewn-in bra-like details are a classic look and one of my favorites! Remember, fit is everything! Bra-detailed tops or dresses that are too small will cause overflow, which is always an unequivocal don’t.  For the daring retro femme, try flaunting this Spellbound polka-dot strapless chemise by Blush.

The Don’ts of Wearing Underwear as Outerwear:

1. This is a bit of a throw back to my high-school days, but thongs sticking out of pants, or visible underneath shear bottoms are a definite don’t. This also goes for bright or patterned undies beneath white pants. Sure, it’s great to wear sexy lingerie, but part of the sexiness of the lingerie is the mystery in not being able to see it every time you bend over.
2. This is a women’s blog, but it should be mentioned that men wearing underwear as outerwear is almost always a Don’t. (We can bend the rules for Calvin Klein models ONLY when on set. Yum.) Sorry, Jeremy Scott.
3. Choosing to wear almost any of the above “Do”s in a professional office setting for which fashion is NOT a major focus is actually a don’t. Remember, lingerie as outerwear is usually best considered a Do when at the beach or in some type of night-time setting.
4. Getting off-balance is a don’t. Pairing a bra top with panty-like bottoms really is underwear rather than outerwear.
5. The slip dress. I’m on the fence about this one. Sometimes it’s a do, and sometimes it’s a don’t. For this one, I’ll let you decide.
