How to Measure Bras

A woman can go through as much as six different size changes throughout her life. These changes are due to fluctuations in pregnancy, weight, use of birth control pills and menopause. This is probably why an estimated 80% of women wear the wrong bra size.

To find the perfect bra it is important to know your size or approximate size and to estimate what style bra is most convenient for you. It is equally important to consider that sizing standards from one manufacturer is not the same standard as another, that European sizes are smaller than American and Canadian sizes, that breast shapes vary from one person to another. Given these facts go directly to Step One.

How to find your size

Your band size represents your diaphragm or your body. The number 30, 32, 34 and so on is known as the underbust measurement because it is taken from underneath your bust and around your rib cage.

Your cup size is the letter which represents the depth of your bust. The letters A,B,C and so on, known as the overbust measurement is taken around the fullest part of the bust.

Step One - Band Size

With your bra on use a standard dressmaker's tape measure and measure snugly around your rib cage, under your bust and shoulder blades. Add 5  to that number.  Once you add the 5, if the number is even then that is your Band Size. If the number is odd round up to one.  If, let's say, it's 31 then add 1 to make it even and it becomes 32. The best idea is to measure in inches, since that's the industry standard.

Ribcage Add 5" Imperial Size Metric Size
27" +5" 32" 70cm
29" +5" 34" 75cm
31" +5" 36" 80cm
33" +5" 38" 85cm
35" +5" 40" 90cm
37" +5" 42" 95cm
39" +5" 44" 100cm

Step Two - Cup Size

Still using the same tape measure with a bra on and your clothes off place the tape measure under your arms and over the fullest part of your bust.

Subtract the final number obtained from Step 1 (rib cage measurement) from number you just obstained. E.X. Step 1 = 38, Step 2 = 42. 42 - 38 = 4. 4 Converts to D cup. Use the table below to see the rest of the values.

Note that in the table below there IS some minor ambiguity. Usually when that's the case, the sizes are interchangeable. The closer one is to the next cup up, the more interchangeable the cup sizes will be.

Of course, if you're still having trouble fitting your bras, you can always contact the bra doctor and she will help you sort things out. Remember to provide as much information as you can so she can give you accurate advice. The more information she has, the better she will be able to help you. Also note that not all companies follow the same conventions when it comes to sizing, which means that even if you measure yourself properly and some bras fit, others might not.
